The John Wendell Barrett House, circa 1832, is located on Nantucket along historic Main Street. This Greek Revival beauty with fluted pilasters, a columned portico and a stately cupola, nearly burned down in the Great Fire of 1846. The owner, Lydia Barrett, at the time of the fire refused to evacuate and luckily with the shifting winds, the fire managed to spare the structure. The Historic American Buildings Survey – a program initiated by the U.S. Department of the Interior in the 1930’s — marked the building as a significant early American property.
In 2013, the craftsmen at Seaport Shutter were part of the historic renovation of the Main Street property manufacturing custom exterior shutters from mahogany for the front facade of the building to replicate the original shutters from the 1800’s.
